Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

The drug giant Pfizer is investigating whether the Food and Drug Administration may have taken advantage of its financial ties to boost sales of the drugs Viagra and Cialis.
On Friday, Pfizer will launch a new drug to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The drug, called Viagra, is sold under the brand name Viagra.
The FDA is investigating whether Pfizer could have been paying the drug company royalties on the drug's sales for up to three years after it was approved by the FDA in 1998.
In addition, the company could have received royalties for marketing the drug to other companies and then could have used those marketing proceeds to compensate Pfizer for its losses.
The Pfizer pharmaceutical giant has said that its share price will be lower than it would have been in the prior year.
The drug, also called Viagra, will be sold in the United States under the brand name Cialis. The company said it will not pay the drug company royalties in the future.
On Wednesday, Pfizer announced that it had filed a patent covering the use of the drug. However, Pfizer said it was not aware of any pending lawsuit pending against the drug giant over the patent. The company also said it would have the patent to protect its marketing and distribution rights.
Pfizer said it would pay the royalty for marketing the drug to other companies and will also pay Pfizer for its efforts in developing Viagra, the patent for which it is still in litigation.
The drug will be available in a dosage form called "Viagra" for adult men aged 18 and above. It has also been approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The drug was introduced in 1998 by Pfizer, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Pfizer is expected to begin selling the drug in the next few months.
Pfizer said it is also working on a marketing strategy to promote the drug to physicians. The drug will be available in the United States and Canada, and the company also has a marketing strategy for using the drug to increase sales in the United States and Europe.
Pfizer is also working to create a similar marketing strategy for the drug, which would include offering it to U. S. patients who may not have been affected by the drug's side effects.
Pfizer said that its patent for Viagra was still pending, but its marketing strategy will be to promote the drug to physicians and other patients. It will be launched in Europe, Japan, the U. K., the U. and Canada, as well as in China.
The FDA approved the drug in 1998 and Pfizer is now seeking to challenge that decision.
Pfizer is still trying to obtain permission from the FDA to market the drug and will make a final decision in the future. The company is also trying to establish its own marketing strategy in order to gain access to its drug.In the meantime, Pfizer said it will continue to promote Viagra to patients who have been affected by the side effects of the drug. Pfizer said it will continue to work with other companies to develop new marketing strategies to help boost sales.
The FDA is investigating the case and will continue to monitor Pfizer's efforts to gain access to its product.
The FDA said it has no comment at the time of publication.
